Kablooie
Welp the SETI Data Servers are down right now. They were up earlier
today, but connections were slow and very infrequent earlier.
Apparently the offending disk went south and they are replacing it right
now. The word from Eric:
Disk go kablooie. Server down
(0145UT, 31-Mar-00)
The disk that was causing the server to be slow this afternoon
just imploded. We're swapping in a spare now. We
should
be back up soon.
SETI Newsletter
I noticed this late last night. On the SETI homepage there is a sort
of progress newsletter up now. Here is a little snipet:
We've found several extremely strong signals.
Unfortunately , none of these have turned out to be extraterrestrials.
Upon re-analysis of the signals (either by SETI@home Berkeley, or by
re-sending them to a different client), all have turned out to be radio
frequency interference, or test signals we inject into the data stream
to monitor system, or improperly processed work units.
You can check out the entire
newsletter here.
600,000 WU
Nothing much else to say....WAY TO GO TEAM LAMB CHOP!
Messin Around
I will be messing around with the formats of some of the pages in the next
couple of days...if there is a lack of news, this is the reason why :P
v2.4 Warning
There has been alot of chatter on the newsgroups about the v2.4 unix
clients. Most of them are not command line savvy and think that
there is something wrong with the new clients because it doesn't say
anything after start up. But because of the client not writing to
disk as much, you will not get the percentage done as the previous client
does. The ONLY way you can get anything is to run the client with
the -verbose switch.
Weekly Stats
Yup.....they are finally up! Check
them out. C. Eric Smith
took tops this week in work units, mainly because guru
split his work units between his SpeedRacer and guru accounts. Tobler
Design slid in at fourth behind them. In the movement
category, Smoke raced up 25+ spots
this week, MrCatbert keeps on moving
up taking second, while danh wasn't
far behing in third.
On the daily slide......PGS has
passed OoklaTheMok back again into #15 even though he may not stay there
that long. Dan Dan The Linux Man
moved past Turbo to #17. Turbo
regained his lost spot by passing Panders for #17. Vulture
moved up two to #24. The Weeblows
and 77rickyli both moved up one to #26
and #28 respectively. The Phrog leapt
up one to #30. Memnoch continues
his climb moving up two to #33. And finally, mznthrope
is up one to #37
Back up!
I guess if you can read this then the site is back up :-). The site
had to change the IP address and the site was down while the DNS
propagation was taking effect, If you can see this then everything is ok
now.
v2.4 CLI
The v 2.4 CLI is available for download. It isnt officially up on
the SETI download page but you can find it on the ftp
servers. I haven't checked it ouf for sure to see if it is
faster/slower/whatever. There was a few bug fixes in the new version
(see below March 20th). There is no absolute NEED to change versions
with the CLI, but if you had problems then maybe it is for you.
More Stats
No.......not from ME! It looks like the SETI guys are going to go
ahead and put up stats for the entire teams. You can check them out
with real time updates here.
Also it looks like they finally got the overall team standings pages up
and you can check out them
here. They also changed the stats lookup for individual
people (you know that box thing on the bottom of the menu on the
left). I have fixed that so it works correctly (thanks to Mickey
Lostia for pointing out the change :-). A sort of
editorial comment on the SETI guys adding more stats. There are some
on the newsgroups who think that they should do without the stats, that it
only leads to cheating and takes the focus away from the goals of the
project. These people believe what they think is best for the
SETI@Home project, and want to force their views upon everyone. I
have always countered their rantings with the fact that the SETI group
seems to keep adding more options for stats for people to keep track of
their progress. The SETI crew knows what is needed to keep people
interested and involved in their project. The sense of competition
is a driving force for alot of people. Without the stats I am sure
that many or even most of the people involved right now would not
participate. This site wouldnt be in existance, and the SETI guys
would be fighting for participants. I personally don't know what the
added statistics will translate to with this site. I really don't
think I can handle doing any more statistics teamwise (top 200 will be it
:P). I will have to think about the feasibility of doing some other
things....but I will let ya know :)
Updates
I will have the weekly updates and some other stuff up later on
tonight...just not right now :)
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee
OK that was fun! Decided with the new CPU I should start anew with
my computer and reinstalled Win98 late last night. Man I never knew
it was such a pain in the butt reconfiguring things the way I had them
before, and to remember installing all of the junk I had previously.
I installed Office2K after the Win98 reinstall and I am getting some weird
things happening now. You will probably notice the
"different" look on the member charts. This is due to
Excel2K. I am not sure why, but it is not carrying over the
formatting from Excel2K to FrontPage2K. I didn't have this problem
with the previous version of Excel I had, but I will have to play around
with it a bit.
I do want to urge patience with both me and the site in general the
next couple of days. We are trying to get the server straightened
out to help better serve you, and I am trying to get my computer
straightened out to help both this page and myself :). This means
there may be a lack of news in the next couple of days..but when things
get straightened out it will be back to normal.
