March 4, 2000

Phew!
Man O Man......C. Eric Smith and Gonzo put the hammer down yesterday.  When the dust cleared when I did the update today it was CES on top.  The work units were flying with CES posting 696 WUs and Gonzo posting 502 WUs yesterday....CES is now in the #4 position, and Gonzo is still at #5.  SouthPark Admin Crew dropped two spots down to #6.   But the question is who make #4 first?  It was really close, but CES passed SouthPark first.  It was so close that when CES moved into #4, there was only 10 WUs separating all three.  Gonzo tried to make a comeback actually passing CES and moving into #4 for a while, but CES passed him back to retain the #4 spot for the day.

In other news.....Beryllium moved up two spots to #34.  Unfortunately while there was a pretty good race going on....there was some attrition to the team yesterday.  Both Warthog (1991 WU) and psingh01 (498 WU) left the team.  Warthog had mentioned a couple of weeks ago, in the team thread that he was going to give up on SETI.....and today he left the team.  I just want to point out, if you decide that you want to give SETI a rest for a while, or if you want to quit SETI outright, you don't have to leave the team.  If you stop producing work units you wont lose your work units already processed, nor will you disappear from a team.  If you leave the team though, the team that you were on loses the work units that you have processed.

Weird Stats
There has been some strange things going on with some people's stats recently.  There was a thread on the newsgroups questioning the work units that some members have been posting recently.....and there were some who where hinting that those people were cheating in one form or another.  In one post, there was a list of people who "cranked out" an amazing amount of work units in one day.  In the list there were 8 people who posted 10,000 WUs in a 24 hr period....with the tops being 31,000 WUs.  In that list was none other than....lugosi.  Remember him?  Read a bit further down for more info on him.  He posted 18.5K  WUs during that day.  At the same time the stats reporting on the SETI site was screwed up with a day missed on the Team stats update.

Someone questioned whether or not it had to do with the Feb 29th bug that some people predicted would cause problems.  I posted that it was near the time where some of the older clients were going to be retired/cut off from returning work units, and said that some unscrupulous people may try to pad their stats with bogus work units for one last time.

Hiram chimed in on the thread with this post:

As all ya'all have noticed, something unusual happened to the stats on March 1st.  We are still not sure what it is. It seems to be a problem at the server receiving end.
It seems to be related to the version 1.x expiration of the clients:
sparc-sun-solaris2.6, alpha-dec-osf3.0, i386-sco-sysv5.unixware7, i386-pc-sco3.2v5.0.x, i386-pc-sysv4.2uw2.1, i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1, and i386-sequent-sysv4

Which happened this past weekend.  The WU return rate for all of these clients mysteriously jumped on March 1st.  It is merely a problem of properly counting results.  The science has not been jeopardized, and these clients are not actually returning more WUs than is normal.

We are looking into the problem to see what happened.

Race for #4
What started out as a race for #5 has turned into a race for #4.  .Originally the young guns were shooting for Gonzo sitting at the #5 spot...early in the race it looked like a two man race between svdsinner and Vomesh for overtaking Gonzo first.  Out of nowhere Tobler Design raced up the charts and it looked like he would supplant Gonzo first.  Within the past week and half the situation has changed significantly.  C. Eric Smith became the frontrunner by recruiting a fleet of computers and Took aim for #5.  To his surprise it Gonzo had some tricks up his sleeve.  In the past three days Gonzo has ramped up his production and is neck and neck with CES in production.  CES may soon be in the #5 spot, but not how originally thought.  With Gonzo's jump in production, they are now shooting at the #4 spot currently held by The SouthPark Admin Crew.  As of today's update (at 3:30 EST) Gonzo was about 100 WU behind SouthPark, while CES was 100 WU behind Gonzo.  Who will make it there first?  It is up in the air right now....It is now 4:30pm and CES is only 55 WU behind Gonzo....while Gonzo is 79 WU behind SouthPark......

SETI Crunching on Playstaion 2?
With all the hype about the power of the new PSX2...some people have been saying that it would make a great machine to crunch work units on (if at all possible).  Hiram has noticed the possibility also and posted this yesterday:

Believe it or not, a Playstation engineer examined the code to
see if it would port.  It would have been a major piece of work,
not practical at all.

Ok.......I guess not :-)

Woah...
(In my worst Keanu Reeves impression)...Art Bell dropped a bomb today.  They dropped  up a 35K WU bomb today by adding member lugosi to their team....he brings 30,000+ WU with him.

The reason why the club team numbers seem a bit steep today is because the SETI pages didn't update their stats last night at midnight.  I manually updated the stats about 18 hrs after they normally get updated.

There was a change in rankings within the top Club Teams today.  The Knights Who Say Ni! passed up OS/2 Warp today to claim the Club Team #10 spot.  Something that is interesting is the downfall of Team Slashdot.  They once were in good position cranking out lots of work units....but then they got hit when the SETI crew cleaned out the "cheaters".  Ever since then they have been posting mediocre numbers.  The same can be said by the Linux and PowerBook teams.  Once teams that looked promising are now floundering.  I guess to hide their demise the Ogrady's PowerBook Team recently changed their team name to "Ogrady's Go2Mac.com Team"  Even though I really don't care for anything Mac, the PowerBook in their name at least sounded respectable......having a dot-com address in the team name sounds plain stupid.  I have not and will not refer to them by that name....and they forevermore will be knows as "PowerBook" to me.

Surprises?
There was several moves today in the top 40.....plus there is a couple of surprises in the mix also.  Tobler Design leaves another in his wake today.  He passes up svdsinner for the #7 spot overall.  Moving down the charts a bit Vulture moved up one to the #26 spot.  Vasp passes Clayton Olley into #32, and the biggest surprise to me has to be Beryllium passing 3 other members and moving into #37.  Why is this surprising?   When I first started keeping stats in October he was in the #10 spot....but he was only posting a work unit every other day.  By the first of this year he had slipped down to the #54 spot and was in danger of slipping even further due to the onslaught of competitive team members.  But since the first of the year he has started cranking out more work units...averaging around 25 WU/Day and has steadily been moving up again.  He broke back into the top 40 today with a 60+ WU spike.  Welcome back Beryllium! :-)

Another person who is cranking it up is OrlBamf.  I guess he was getting tired of other people passing him by also.  For the past two days he has upped his work unit/day from an average of 21 WU/day to posting 119 and 78 yesterday and today.....he is one to watch out for!

Back In Business...
The hiatus is over....and the "normal" home is back online.  Hopefully this will never happen again!  :-)

My Bad....
I guess that I spoke too soon yesterday saying that SpeedRacer was back.  The WU output he had yesterday was only due to him flushing completed work units from a back log...he isn't back yet.

It's Evil Baby!!!!!!
Took a look at my user stats today and what did I see?  The mark of the Beast!

Welcome Back!....See You Later....
Man....there seems to be a bit of win some lose some with Team Lamb Chop in the past couple of days.  Today we regined the services of PGS who returned to the team at #28.  Unfortunately, we lost two members from the top 200.....Sphere left the team with 520 WUs.....and also _Quinn with 2295 WUs...  Come Back!  Shane!  Come Back!

Half a Million Satisfied Work Units
Yes......Team Lamb Chop passed a milestone today.....Quite a milestone also.  500,000 WUs processed.  CONGRATS TEAM LAMB CHOP.  Even though I only have the means to keep track of the top 200 members of the team.  It takes *every* member to make a team and without each of you we would never have been able to reach the half million mark.  We thank you for your support!

Its Heating Up!
The race for #5 is definitely heating up right now.....C. Eric Smith put up a 500 spot today.  He is now within 400 WU of Gonzo.  Gonzo doesn't look like he is going to take it laying down either.  He put up a 148 WUs today....far above his average.  How long can Gonzo hold him off?

Meanwhile back at the ranch...There wasn't many moves up the charts in the top 40 today.  With PGS returning you would expect alot of members to move down....but with _Quinn leaving most of those moved back up that spot they lost.  Within the top 40 there was only one member who moved up a notch.....and that happened to be LrdHghFxr who moved up one spot to #31.

Version 2.0 Multithreaded or Not?
There has been some confusion on whether or not the version 2.0 client is multithreaded or not.  I know some people has seen CPU "usage" that indicates that it is not.  But it appears that the reporting program may not be giving an accurate description of what is actually going on.  I shall leave the explanation up to Hiram.

> There is a misunderstanding going on with the -cpu argument and the
> thought that it doesn't work with the winnt-cmdline client.
> I have been informed of the following observation:
>
>     The CPU affinity is set *by thread*, while the Task Manager reports
>     priority *by process*.  If you look at the CPU graphs you will see
>     that the client really is only running on the CPU you specify,
>     even though right clicking on the task in Task Manager suggests it
>     can run on all CPUs.
>
> From my experience, the -cpu argument works just fine.

That is all for now!

New GUI Client Soon
There are some more bug fixes for the version 2 GUI which will be addressed in version 2.03.  What are the fixes being addressed?  I dunno...but there is a list of known bugs on this page.  Here is what Matt Lebofsky had to say about the new client...

A 2.03 is in the works. Fixes a lot of stuff. If all goes well, this will be the official release version, and 1.06 will phased out over the course of a few weeks - first the polite warnings, then the stern demands, then no 1.x results will be accepted.

Team Musings
After a rather uneventful day in the top 40 yesterday, there is a bit of movement today.  77rickyli moved past _Quinn and into the #28 spot.  The Phrog moved up one past Clayton Olley for #30.  LrdHghFxr put the move on two members hopping a copule of spots into #32.  Finally Warthog moved up one past tron into #38.

After a brief absence SpeedRacer looks like he is cranking out some more work units......the jaunt over to RC5 didn't last too long......and I would like go give him a good welcome back!.

Team Page
Tomorrow the page's exile from its normal home should be over, and should be accessible from the previous address.  That page will still have the old info on it from several days ago (I cannot upload/download anything to the account till tomorrow)d.  The next update will be at the old address....and the old info will remain on that address until I do the update (which may be around 5-6pm tomorrow night).

Hopefully, the Stats page will be moving to a new, permanent, bandwidth limit free site SOON!

Big Game Tonight....
Today's update it a tad bit early, because I have a hockey game in about 2 hrs.  This is a big game because it pits the top two teams in the league against each other.  Our team (Blue Angels) has a record of 16-1-1, while our opponents (Navy Seals) are 17-0-1.  This is big because there are only two games remaining.  If we can win tonight we can tie their record...and gain revenge for their 6-4 win against us several weeks ago.  I shall let you know sometime soon :-).

Update:
Unfortunately we lost tonight 6-1.  We were quite shorthanded tonight with 3 of our top scorers not there...and our best defenseman......but again 16-2-1 still isnt a bad record! :-)

Version 3.0 How Soon?
It looks like version 3.0 of the SETI clients will be out as soon as 1 month, but more realistically in 2 months.  This new client will have additional science associated with the client, plus a faster FFT routine.  They are hoping that the clients will have a similar completion time to the ones already released.  Eric Korpela hinted to the release time in a post yesterday:

We've got the science portion of the pulse finding code integrated with a client and we're testing it now.  What remains to be done is add graphical indications that pulse finding is taking place, some sort of display when one is found, and recalcuating the "% done" percentages.  I'm on vacation for a week starting today, so 30 days from today might be a little optimistic, but it is possible.

Eric

Hopefully the version 3.0 client will not be significantly slower than the current one.  I can see now the outcry from the SETI@Home participants complaining that their average time is falling.....

Weekly/Daily Stuff
The weekly update is posted.  Even with his gearing down this past week, SpeedRacer took home tops in work unit for the week.  C. Eric Smith was in second, but expect him to take over tops this week.  That is depending on how long his SETI burn in of his new network lasts :-).  There was a tie this week in the movement up the charts category.  Both Daryle A. Tilroe and pgardner moved up 24 spots this week......Congrats to them and all of the hard crunching team members!

Woah.....in the top 40.......things are kind of quiet today.  There was no moves up or down for any of the top 40 team members......this may change tomorrow though!

It was Inevitable...
If you are here I guess you already know that I ran over my bandwidth limit for the month of February.  This is a temporary solution till the beginning of March for the page.  I would like to thank Rat Bastard for the offer to host the temp stats page 'til the end of the month.

I have pared down the site just a tad.  I am only including the member stats here.  This is to keep things a bit simple, plus not to take too much space on RB's account :-)

I will be posting the day's stats update sometime soon....but I just wanted to get this up quyickly and then work on the stats later.....

Stay Tuned!

Daily Stuff
The daily update is up now.....I am going to wait till tomorrow to do the weekly stuff though.  The big news for the day is that PGS has left the team.  I, for one, am sorry to see him go.  Good luck to where ever he may end up.  Unfortunately, he took along 2400+ WU with him.  Those below him all moved up one spot because of him leaving.

Other moves....C. Eric Smith moved passed svdsinner for the #6 spot moving him in the prime striking position to overtake Gonzo.  The Phrog moved up a total of 3 spots and is now in the #31 spot.  LrdHighFxr moved up two spots to #34, and Del B. move dup two to #37.
