NEWS Hardware freaks trying to make some sense out of a bunch of numbers |
|
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee I do want to urge patience with both me and the site in general the next couple of days. We are trying to get the server straightened out to help better serve you, and I am trying to get my computer straightened out to help both this page and myself :). This means there may be a lack of news in the next couple of days..but when things get straightened out it will be back to normal.
*Cough* *Cough* While i was sleeping, OoklaTheMok has moved up 4 spots into the past two days and now sits in the #15 spot. PGS moved up one net spot to #16 even though he was passed by Ookla. The PGS output may not be quite as high as before. davels posted in the team thread that the PGS crew had to take SETI off of their desktop machines at the request of their manager :(. Even with that loss the PGS crew has issued a challenge that they will be ahead of Ookla by the end of the day! Beryllium and 77rickyli has moved up one spot in tandem to #28 and #29 respectively. Daryle A. Tilroe moved up one to #33 and Memnoch moved up one to #36. We added a new member to the top 40 today. AM joined the team with about 2400 WUs and immediately moved into the #36 spot. Im not sure...but could this be Vasp reincarnated? 1904 Members! I have a couple of things in the works. I am working on a comparison between analyzed work units between the version 1.3 and 2.0 CLI clients. There are a couple of interesting things going on, as most people know, the version 2.0 client is faster, but may not have known the new client seems to process/report the results a bit differently. I am also working on a graph for the top few members of the team showing their standings *overall* and now their position changed on a weekly basis. Both of these may not show up today, but for sure in a couple of days.
One thing I would like to note. I hadn't updated my BIOS in a while, after flashing the bios and taking a look in the BIOS there were ALOT of changes within the BIOS itself. They apparently added several more FSB choices and also included several more PCI bus dividers for the FSB selections. I now kick myself for not upgrading the BIOS earlier because it may have increased my overclocking abilities for the celeron. But I digress. There are also several more options for latency timing, which may also be helpful. After the BIOS flash and booting to make sure things were OK. I powered down and unplugged the sucker. Took out the celeron and then slapped in the 600e. The 600e doesn't fit exactly into the brackets that I have on the MoBo so currently it is just sitting in there firmly, but not really *secure*. Power up, change BIOS to the default CPU settings (600MHz @ 100FSB) and checked the voltage and it correctly set it to 1.65V. Boot was a success. Ok that is boring enuff right? Restart....check BIOS....look at the FSB choices (which there are many more). 112? na too low for me. 133? na. don't think my RAM can handle it right off. 124? OK baby lets try that. After the BIOS update there is now a 1/4 PCI bus divider that wasnt there previously (only was a 1/3 divider at 124MHz). I chose the 124 (1/4) and restarted. Booted to windows no problem at all. Running at a nice swanky 744MHz as seen in the pic to the right. Even running SETI the CPU/MoBo is running pretty cool. My celeron @ 550MHz was a good 7-10 F warmer than the PIII is now. 744 is nice......but we cant stop there! I changed the BIOS to see if we can get this puppy up to 800MHz. Set it to 133MHz FSB (1/4) and restarted. Dammit. It hung at the POST screen. It posted 800MHz, but it hung right there. Looking back in the BIOS, I see yet *another* new FSB setting and decide to try it.....a nice medium between 124 and 133. I set the FSB to 129 (1/4) and restarted. The computer *ALMOST* completely booted to windoze, but right when the desktop popped up there was an error message saying there was a registry error and need to be rebooted to fix it. Same thing happened when I tried to reboot. I had to go back to 124 (1/4) FSB, and that is what I am running right now seems pretty stable. I have been running SETI for about 2 hrs without a hiccup. Apparently my RAM is holding me back right now in the overclocking department. I have generic PC100 rated RAM, and I guess it just cant handle the FSB settings higher than 124MHz. I am sure that a couple of sticks of PC133 RAM will let me get to 800MHz easily. I haven't tried messing with the voltage settings to try to get the overclock higher. There is a possibility that upping the voltage a notch or two will let me hit 129 or 133 MHz FSB. I will give that a shot sometime later, maybe after burning in with SETI first. Guess I should give some p1mping to the site where I bought my CPU and Heatsink/Fan Combo! I bought them from Dynasty Express. I have absolutely no complaints with their service! I placed the order late on Sunday night on their website selecting the 2 day shipping VIA UPS. I checked their site on Monday and it said "confirmed, processing order". According to their site late Tuesday night the package was shipped. When I came home from work today the box was at my door! (they shipped overnight VIA UPS. Granted their prices may not be the rock bottom lowest, but the shipping was reasonable, and they didn't limit the amount of things to buy (like some of the pricewatch vendors do). The whole upgrade process lasted less than 3 days from order to overclock and it was done under $300. Short Update Today
Ookla Ca Choo... Again, unfortunately the team lost another member. Veritech Knight left the team taking along with him 1115 WUs. He will be missed, as well as everyone who has left the team :(. Europe Phone Home?
Got News? The team has had several members join the top 200 this week. Some of them recently joined the team, and some of them have reached the top 200 coming through the ranks. There were 5 new people to the top 200 this week that included FatalException, James Au, Smoke, Sundiver and o[: ) (whatever that symbol is ;). Unfortunately this week there were three members who decided to leave the team. Those who left were Hurkyl, Vasp - 25 anos, and MacMillan Y-4. Between the three they left with 4,100 Work Units. It has been a while since I have done a top 40 update....so here it goes :). These are the moves that happened since 3/14. svdsinner moved past the idle SouthPark Admin Crew into the #7 spot. PGS keeps moving on up, originally he lost a spot to OoklaTheMok, but regained that spot and two more, moving up to #17. OoklaTheMok oh the other hand only moved up a net one spot up to #20. Guidant is cranking out in earnest again, moving up 2 spots to #24. The Weeblows blows up one spot to #26. Vulture moved up one also to #27. Beryllium moves up 3 more spots to #29. Daryle A. Tilroe keeps pushing ahead. He has moved up a total of 6 spots since the 14th to #34. mzanthrope moved up one to #36. Del. B moved up one also to #37. Memnoch is cranking it up pretty good also moving up 5 spots, into the top 40 and landing at #39. WAY TO GO TEAM! Version 2.4 Text Clients
One thing to note about the version 2.4 clients, is that there will be no *requirement* to upgrade to the newer versions. If you are having problems with the 2.0 client, then upgrade. If the 2.0 client is fine, there is really no need to upgrade to the 2.4 client. Bye Bye v. 1.3 CLI Did you Know? Even with the defections from the team the past week we are still putting out about the same # of work units as Art Bell. We aren't gaining on them yet, but we are hanging with them. Not bad for Team Lamb Chop with 10,000 members less than they have :). We are still pulling away from MacAddict. Their gain of 30K work units a couple of weeks ago still hasn't helped their daily production. They got a bit closer to us, but we are pulling back away. Team Lamb Chop is still entrenched as the #7 team overall. We are pulling away from everyone below us, The teams above us are another story. Art Bell isn't the next team in our sights. Microsoft is the team in our sights right now. They are sitting in the #6 spot, and we are gaining on them...at a pretty hefty rate. They are currently 150,000 WUs ahead of us but we are cutting into their lead at a rate of about 40,000 WU/month. if things at the same rate as now, we should pass Microsoft somewhere around the beginning of June or even earlier! At #5 is Intel. They had been pulling away from us, but we are slowly turning the tide on them. We are almost matching Intel's output right now....maybe with a membership push we can turn that around and gain on them :) As of now, the top three is out of touch for us.....unless we can get some defections from SGI ;)
Welcome! This is where the new stats will be housed. Be patient because I am working on changing all of the pages over to the new format and maybe switching this, that and the other over to whatever, I don't know. Some of the links may not work, but hopefully I will get them all fixed when we get settled in and when Rat Bastard gets the benchmarking pages moved over to the domain also. Give me a couple of days to get things fixed...then you can flood my email with problems with the site or things that are broken! The new menu bar looks cool, but I hope that it isn't a pain in the ass for you to use, or is broken on your browser. Right now it doesn't work correctly on some of the older pages, but I will be fixing that soon. |
