Still Movin....
They are still whittling away at the backlog on the stats servers. Team Lamb Chop is still posting some pretty good numbers. Over the past four days we have gained on /. and MacAddict by 3100 and 3600 work units respectively. We should still gain on them some more as they keep working on that backlog. As I am writing this we are in the process of passing the 200,000 work unit mark! Way to go Team Lamb Chop! To put it in perspective though....Art Bell is in the process of breaking the 400,000 work unit mark!

There was one notable move in the top 20 today....Vomesh moved passed Whiner and is in the #15 spot.

Cloud of Dust
The backlogged results are kicking in and our team totals are starting to fly. It looks like the new server that they installed is working great. I dont think that there will be a lump sum "flush" of the backlogged units. It looks like the new server can handle the normal load of processing stats and also work on the backlog. It is working on the backlog and it shows in the team results today. Since yesterdays update Team Lamb Chop has gained over 1500 work units on both /. and MacAddict. The number of work units for the day *almost* equaled that of Art Bell! Processing of the backlog looks like it will take a couple of more days. It is going to be interesting to see how much we close the gap on both /. and MacAddict. Also with todays update the Team average time per work units has gone under 17 hrs/WU!

Cha-Ching!
It looks like SpeedRacer has taken a break today....but romkey hasnt. He has passed up mjdewitt and is now #7 in the team standings. FluffyPants made another move yesterday and passed up Grimas...he is now #18.

OK All Get Ready for a Ride!
Looks like the server upgrade was a huge success! Already the improvement can be seen in the stats that I have posted today. You wont see anything special in the team stats today, but take a look at my "split" graph and you can see what I mean. The numbers from our team page seems to be updating *all* team members WUs now.....and the new server has the power to be able to keep up with the stats. Over the next couple of days look for the servers to clear the huge backlog that had accumulated. Look for the "flush" soon. If you want to see just how bad the backlog had gotten take a look at this graph from the SETI Berkeley pages. I estimate from the flush we should get a jump of at least 20,000 work units...and maybe as high as 25,000 WUs. Here is what the Berkeley guys have to say about the server upgrade:

December 7, 1999
We have successfully transferred the user database over to the final Enterprise 450, with the desired results. It has greatly speeded up our handling the user database portions of the server connections. In addition we are finally clearing the backlog of stats (results recieved, cpu time, team accounting, country stats, etc). For an indication of how much faster the stats are getting added, look at the
rate of change graphs for total CPU time and number of results recieved per day. Up until now these stats have been showing how fast our user database is. In a few days, after the backlog has cleared, they'll show how many results and how much CPU time we really get in a day.

Top 100
There was only one change in the top 20 today....Guidant passed up Whiner for the #14 spot. Also Ator's in and out of the top 100 brings him back in again and he is now #99

Hockey
Had another hockey game tonight......We smoked 'em 8-0. My GAA is now a thrifty 1.75.

Warning! Danger Will Robinson!
For all of you who have a slew of computers running the client. There will be a server outage tomorrow morning while the Berkeley guys change their database servers. The outage is "scheduled" to be from 8:00am-11:00am PST tomorrow (Tuesday). Be prepared....and most likely it will take them longer than the 3 hours that they have planned for this. You will not be able to upload/download any data to their servers during this time. Here is a snipet I got from alt.sci.seti:

Hello, Everyone..

FYI, tomorrow morning (12/7) Eric, Jeff, and I will be completing the second
phase of the general SETI@home hardware upgrade. This time we're upgrading
the database server from a Sun Ultra 10 to an Enterprise 450. We'll be
shuffling drives and memory around in the process. We have to take the
database offline and then reload it onto the new machine, which means
the outage could take as much as three hours.

The fun begins around 8:00am PST. Nobody will be able to submit/receive
data during the outage. Sorry for any inconvenience.

This server change is probably the prelude to them changing over their entire database to a new one. Hopefully this will help in getting things to run more smoothly for them (i.e. less server crashing). Also supposedly after they change to the new database they will be unveiling the new version of the SETI client. I havent heard any type of timeline for the new client being released...but I have a feeling that it may be rolled out before the end of the year.

Hello? McFly? Hello?
Welp....they still havent heard anything from the Mars Polar Lander. Things are looking quite grim for it. Of all the hypotheses I have heard about what happened, this one sounds most plausible (found on the
ars technica forums).

No, you guys have it all wrong. THIS is what happened...

As soon as the Pathfinder Rover heard that the Polar Lander had touched down, it raced to the south pole of Mars. On arrival the lonely rover begain to vigorously hump the lander, tilting its antena, making communication impossible.

How Am I Doing?
Some of you may wonder just how am I doing team wise and how many WUs I have completed. Well here is the answer. I currently have processed 393 work units at an average time of 11 hours 53 minutes. I only have two machines running the SETI client. My machine: Celeron 366 @ 550MHz, 192MB RAM and my girlfriend's computer: Celeron 300a @ 338MHz, 128MB RAM. My machine crunches them out at an average of about 9 hrs 45 min...and the girlfriend's computer does one in about 12 hrs. Right now I have no hope of making the top 100, but that doest matter. I will probably buy a cheap computer when we get hooked up with full broadband so I can run Wingate(?) and share the broadband with my girlfriend....and ok to also run another SETI Client......if any of you have a computer you want to "donate" let me know! :)

Tomorrow's Update
Tomorrow's update may be a bit late. I have an "early" hockey game tomorrow night, and I will ge going straight to the game from work. I probably wont get home till something like 10pm....so dont expect the update to be up until after that.

Did you Know?
I didnt mention anything about it yesterday, but after looking at the weekly update of the Top Overall Teams. Team Lamb Chop has processed more work units than teams from: Hewlett Packard, Apple, IBM, Oracle, AOL, Unisys, CIsco, Novell, Lucent, Sony, Dell and Netscape! Way to go Team! I
REALLY want to pass Intel...but i dont think we can :-(.

One Change
There was only one change in the top 20 today. FluffyPants moved back past Uncomm0n and is now #19. There is one newcomer in the top 100 and that is Jonathan clocking in at #99. He knocked Ator back out of the top 100.

Football Sunday
Go Lions Go! Been watching the Lions/Washington game while doing this update. Ya know it is a damn good game! I hate to say is that most of the football this year in the NFL has been rather boring. Have you actually seen a good Monday/Sunday night game? Most of them have been blowouts or rather boring games. At least there is some excitement in this one. I do have to say that I am rather partial to College Football and College Basketball over their pro counterparts though. That Floriday/Alabama game kind of sucked last night though. How can a football team (Florida) be ranked #4 in the nation when they have a suspect defense and cant even score? Definitely a flaw in the poll ranking system. It puts way too much emphasis on "perceived" performance, over actual performance. I think any of the top 3 Big 10 football teams can beat Florida State, Va Tech, or Nebraska.....but because they beat the heck out of each other during the regular season it takes an Flawless season for say a Big Ten team to win a national championship, but a team like Fla. State can tip toe through a really weak ACC schedule and play for a national championship.

But I really digress!
Back to some regular programming.

MPL Phone Home!
OK I digress again :-). The media has already given up on the Mars Polar Lander. They were spoiled with the success of the Pathfinder mission. But then they jumped on the incompetent SNAFU with the Mars Climate Observer (even I would remember to change units between metric and english). Now they cant even spell out "Mars Polar Lander" and instead call it the "$165 Million Probe". It is not a failed experiment *yet*, but now will be known as a "colossal loss of money". To put it in perspective though...the cost of the MPL would be a drop in the bucket compared to the old type of spacecraft that cost *Billions* of dollars. $165 million is prolly less than the interest the US national debt accrues per day.

What scares me is that the media, US congress will jump on this as a catastropic failure and total loss of money....which will give them more impetus to hack even deeper into the NASA budget. Unfortunately many space exploration efforts will try to scrape by with too few resources to do the job at hand. Blah.

Weekly Stuff
There has been quite a bit of movement at the top of the ranks.
SpeedRacer has moved into the #2 spot. He has taken that spot over from Gonzo who held it for a couple of days (again with the help of SpeedRacer to make it there). With the rate that he is going, he will soon pass the SouthPark Admin Crew in alittle over a week. During the past week SpeedRacer posted the tops in Work Units processed....weighing in with 4117! Over the week he moved up 7 spots. The person moving the most this week happens to be svdsinner. He jumped up some 23 places this week....and now he sits in the #70 spot....looking to move up some more!

There has been a bit of movement in the top 20 in the past couple of days. D2TLM has moved up a spot....he passed up Whiner and is now #13. Vomesh has made a big move into the top 20....he also have moved a bit up from even there. In the past couple of days he has moved past Dr. Xing, Grimas, Uncomm0n and FluffyPants and is now ranking in at #16. Uncomm0n and FluffyPants has been locked in a battle for the past couple of days. Today Uncomm0n has the upperhand and is now #19. They have been back and forth for the past couple of days.....but as of now there is no clear winner.
