Now Showing...Episode 1: What are the K Files?

December 25, 1999

Merry Christmas!

The K Files
I have just added the first installment of The K Files.  This is a new page that will highlight some of the feedback from SETI@Home team member Dr. Eric Korpela.  This feedback mostly comes from the newsgroups alt.sci.seti and sci.astro.seti.  Eric has been a valuable resource and I felt that his comments deserved a page of its own.  Take a look at the K Files here.

We Have an Answer...
Eric Korpela comes through again.  I had asked on alt.sci.seti asking for an explanation about this which previously was on the client version 2.0 page: "NOTE: it is no longer possible to download work units with one version of SETI@home and process the data with a different version; the same exact version must be used throughout."   Eric came back with a reply tonight:

>From what I have been hearing from some members on our team that if it was
>#1 above it may be a problem with them and their multiple machines running
>the SETI client(s)

We had a big discussion about this on tuesday and came to the conclusion that
we would do whatever we could to support current current caching and proxying
schemes.

>If you could explain alittle bit more, it would be greatly
>appreciated....(maybe this is the reason why it was taken off of the Version
>2.0 page?)

Exactly.

Eric

Well apparently the new version would have been limited to processing a work unit with the same client that the work unit was downloaded with.  But it seems that the SETI guys have decided it might not be a good idea......and then they amended the version 2.0 page accordingly.  Happy Day!

Team Movement
There were a couple of moves in the top of the team today.  Vomesh moved up one spot to #12 by passing up C. Eric Smith.  OrlBamf has cranked it up a tad, moving past ojohnson and into the #14 spot.   Also in the moving category, we have _Quinn.  _Quinn moved past Grimas and now is in the #24 spot.

Happy Holidays!
To all the Team Lamb Chop members and other readers of this page I would like to wish you all Happy Holidays and a fruitful and prosperous New Year.  I would also like to thank all of the team members because if it wasn't for each and every one of you there would be no Team Lamb Chop.  I have been happy to do this stats page for the Team, and also it has been a pleasure to see the team grow and progress over the past couple of months.

Send Mail!
I was checking over at benchmarking guru Rat Bastard's page and he is a little depressed because he hasn't received any mail or new benchmarks in the past few days.  How bout giving your machine a break for several hours and submit a benchmark for him!  RB also brings up a good point.  On the SETI page giving information about the version 2.0 client, there was this note included in the description of the new client(s):  "NOTE: it is no longer possible to download work units with one version of SETI@home and process the data with a different version; the same exact version must be used throughout.". Well just what does this mean?  There are two possibilities, one of which may lead to problems to those who have a fleet of machines running the SETI clients.

The first possibility is that it means that you cannot download a work unit from one type of client and then run it on a different client.  In other words you could not download a work units using the command line NT client, and then run it on a Linux client.  This would mean problems in at least two ways.  1) The benchmarking that Rat Bastard has done would be no more.  You may not be able to run the benchmark WU on a different client than the one he downloaded using his client  (but there is a possibility that this may only be a SETI server side check for tampering.  Since the benchmarking result is not to be uploaded to the SETI servers, this may not be a problem(?).  2) The other problem would be that there are some out there who have a fleet of computers running the SETI clients on many different platforms.  There are some who use one or two machines to upload/download stuff to the SETI servers and then distribute to the other computers in the network.  This would be no more, or be very difficult to implement.

On the other hand there is a different explanation for the above quote.  I personally think that this may be the more accurate explanation.  When they release the version 2.0 client, members will be sent notice that there is a new version available and will be directed to download the new version.  At the beginning of the version 2.0 client there will be a window where the SETI servers will accept results from both the previous versions and the v 2.0 client.  What I believe the note above refers to is that you cannot download a work unit using the v 2.0 clint and then process it using a previous version client.  Why is this so?  Mostly they are trying to quash patched versions of the client.  I am sure that there are some unscrupulous people out there who would try to download a work unit using the v 2.0 client, then process the work unit using a previous patched version of the client, and then try to upload the results using the never v 2.0 client.  This would prevent them from trying this.  I believe that this is the case since they only mention the words "different version" and not "different client".  This situation would still leave the possibility for benchmarking the Rat Bastard way using the version 2.0 client.

I believe that the note that was quoted above caused a bunch of questions for many members.  When checking the version 2.0 page on the SETI pages, I noticed that the above note isn't there anymore.  I have posted a question on the newsgroup for one of the SETI guys to answer, but I have yet to hear back from him.  I will pass along anything I find out here.

As Team Lamb Chop Turns
There was only one move in the top 28....and it comes from _Quinn.  He has moved past tron and into the #25 spot. Whiner is having a tough time trying to shake Turbo...but today it seems that he may be putting a little distance between him.  Vomesh is creeping up on C. Eric Smith also....CES may drop a spot back soon....maybe even tonight!  romkey is trying to shake off mjdewitt also...that is a tough one to call right now, even though romkey has opened up a slight cushion on mjdewitt....but only time can tell.

Admission to the top 100 is getting tougher and tougher every day.  Right now it will take a minimum of 550 work units to enter.  It is getting tougher for those who are in the top 100 to stay also.  It seems that alot of the top 100 have a fleet of computers to use, and there has been quite a bit of turnover in the past week or so.  Within the past couple of days we have had several new members to the top 100, they are Sarcophilus and LrdHghFxr.  On the other hand we did have one top 100 member leave the team.....that was froggy who took with him 1001 work units.

Eric the SETI P.R. Man
On the SETI newsgroups (alt.sci.seti and sci.astro.seti) Eric Korpela has been one of the SETI crew that posts regularly, and offers insight and answers to some of the questions that the SETI@Home members ask.  I have saved a bunch of his messages, and I am going to compile and put up a separate page with his comments from the newsgroups.  These posts have enlightened me a bit to what they think is important to the SETI project, and has also answered some of the questions that people have asked me about the project.  I am going to try to highlight the more important points here on the front page.  It may take me several days to get it all together, but again, I will let ya know.

Interesting Ending
Tonight's hockey game featured a battle of undefeated teams.  Our team the Blue Angels and the opponent Navy Seals were both 6-0.  Unfortunately we lost 6-5.  Why was it an interesting ending?  I only gave up 4 goals (I'm the goalie for our team) and the other goalie gave up 5.  But how did we lose?  Well...we were down 4-3 with about 1:30 left in the game when I went off the ice for an extra skater.  They scored an empty net goal to make it 5-3 with about 1:00 left.  I went back on the ice for the faceoff.....Our team went down the ice and scored one to make it 5-4 with about 45 sec left.  As soon as we got the puck down the ice again I again came off the ice for another skater, and the got *another* empty net goal (6-4 with about 30 sec left).  They won the faceoff and one of their guys came in on a breakaway, our defenseman hauled him down...so we were shorthanded for the rest of the game.  While shorthanded we got the puck and scored with 5 sec left (6-5).  Alas, 5 sec is too short....and we lost......But that sure was weird.

Trying New Things
I installed FrontPage 2000 yesterday and I am updating the page with that now.  Things are a bit different with FP2K, and FP Express.  Some things may look different (the menu looks alittle different), and it may take alittle bit to get used to using this.  If there are any problems with links, looks etc. let me know.

Team Musings
There wasn't any change in the top 27 position wise today.

Here are a few interesting tidbits about the team:  Team Lamb Chop's average CPU time per work unit is 2nd best of the top 30 club teams.  With the addition of guru and davycroc's work units, it dropped our average time down to a nifty 15 hr 38 minutes.  The only team team in the top 30 that has a faster average is FreeBSD with a 15 hr 36 min average.  This may change soon since the team has been averaging something around 14.5hr/WU.

guru isn't done yet.  He posted another 497 units for the team yesterday.  SpeedRacer is trickled out one work unit yesterday.  What about davycroc?  He had none....stick a fork in him.....HE'S DONE!  :-).

Updated
Updated the Graphs and charts.  I have a hockey game I need to leave for in about 5 minutes.  Depending on how I feel after the game tonight I may or may not have anything more to say.

Woah...
(doing my best Keanu Reeves impression)
What can I say?
Team Lamb Chop got an early Xmas present from
guru and davycroc. Both of them rejoined Team Lamb Chop from the Sun team. Their work units has let us overtake both /. and MacAddict and places us in 2nd place behind Team Art Bell (Club Teams).

Their arrival is basically a parting gift as both guru and davycroc are turning their computer power to the RC5 project.
Thanks and Good Luck!

Changes
I changed some of the graphs again....The first graph is now covers the top 13 members. And the second graph now goes from 14-27. With the joining of guru and davycroc everyone took two steps backwards. As for movement in the top 27,
_Quinn moved past Clayton Olley and is #26.

Weekly Update!
Again this week SpeedRacer was #1 in WU this week...he was followed by Vomesh and svdsinner. svdsinner though takes the tops in movement for the week. He hopped 17 places in the top 100 over the past week. Second in moving was SETI @ Vasp.pt.

I have changed a couple of the member graphs. The first two graphs now cover #1 through #11, and the second covers #12 through #25. I did this because there are natural gaps in members, and this allows me to better show how these members are doing in relation to each other. With that there were several changes in the top 25 over the past day. romkey again passed up mjdewitt, and is #7. Whiner passed up Turbo and is now #16. Also, FluffyPants solidifies his spot putting more distance between him and Dr. Xing at #18.

Stats Stuff
Again, the mess with the data servers at the Berkeley home offices, has caused havoc with the Club Team Stats. It looks like right now the totals for individual teams arent being updated again. It may have to do with a backlog created by the servers being overloaded when they finally came back up. Hopefully they will get it straightened out soon.

Random Thought of the Day
If...
Davycroc and guru would have remained with Team Lamb Chop...
We would be in the #2 club team spot...
30,000 WU ahead of /. ...
14,500 WU ahead of MacAddict
