Take the Rat Bastard Benchmark Challenge!
.....Rat Bastard aka Guidant, has set up a SETI Benchmarking page. Take his challenge. We have alot of members using alot of different OSs, CPUs, and setups and we would like to see what are the most important factors in WU processing speed. If we can get alot of response, there should be quite a database of results, and some interesting conclusions can be made. Check out his page here. I should be putting a link in the menu bar soon.

He Once Was Here But Now is Gone...
.....As soon as his bright streak across the Team standings came, it has gone. jackal651 has left the team. His reason (from the
"unofficial" team thread):

Well, no more 400 WU/week! A user who knew how to bring up the task manager (the one there is?) saw seti was pegging the processor and informed my immediate supervisor, citing it was making his computer "sluggish". (I'm thinking, yeah, right.) So we stopped the process on his machine. And I scripted it off the other machines in the building after werk. Funny thing was, at the end of the day, the same user came to me complaining his machine was still slow. So we re-GHOSTed it, and everything was fine.
*sigh*
So no more seti mayhem for the 651'er!! I knew it had to end sometime!! *8^j

Jerome

youre always welcome back Jerome....just bring your work units with you ;).

Flaky is not Just for Dandruff, and Cornbread...
.....the past two days, the team stats were kind of flaky. Most of it had to do with the unsuccessful server upgrade over at the
SETI home offices. Things seem to have settled down though, maybe it will be back to normal.

Team News...
.....There has been quite a bit of movement and changes in the team over the past couple of days.....some good some bad. First off we had the sudden departure of
jackal651 as noted above. Also leaving the Top 100 this week was Rob, and Other.

.....If someone leaves the Top 100, that means that someone must join. So in the past few days, we have several new Top 100 Members: Mazinger, elBeavis, and davycroc. Welcome Aboard!

.....guru is now within striking distance of the SouthPark Admin Crew. He is only 500 WUs from the top spot, but the SouthPark Crew seeing this cranked things back up to hold off his charge.....how long will it last? Only the Shadow knows!

.....AutoLign passed up cthulhu and now is sitting pretty at the #5 spot. romkey is staring down C. Eric Smith and is about to overtake. Whiner slipped both Beryllium and Caesar a mickey and passed them both...he is now standing at the #14 spot. Smooooooth Grimas Smacks the Rat, and is up to #18.....and is looking for an Uncomm0n way to move up further! Finally.....Fragmommy moves into the top 20 with the loss of jackal651.

More SETI@Home Server Problems
.....Hrmmmmmm....maybe some of the Ars hardware gurus could go out to Berkeley and give them a hand. They seem to be having lots of problems with their equipment. I'm sure any help for them would be greatly appreciated ;-)

SERVER OUTAGES UPDATE - October 20, 1999: The upgrade yesterday failed (see tech news for more info), and the server has since been unstable. We will probably replace its motherboard during the next day or so and try the memory upgrade again, during which we will be off-line. If you can't connect, please try again in an hour or so.

October 20, 1999
Arecibo Observatory went off the air today, in preparation for Hurricane Jose.

October 19, 1999
The server was down for a scheduled outage today to add memory. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. After replacing the memory we got numerous ECC messages and, eventually, much crashing. After removing the upgrade, the machine wouldn't power up. We eventually did a brain transplant from one of the splitter machines to get things back to where they were. So we're down a splitter for the time being.

Later in the evening the server crashed a couple more times, but with different symptoms. We found out later this was due to a flakey switch. Generally speaking, this wasn't a good day for the server.

Well....i guess all the action yesterday would account for the weirdness in the stats for today. Not gonna rack my brains trying to come up with something to say when the data is kinda screwed today

ISP Problems Short Lived
.....Apparently it was just some server maintainence last night...it was back up pretty quicklike.

Cant Upload a WU?
.....The SETI guys apparently were working on the servers today. From the Berkeley home office comes this blurb:

SERVER OUTAGE TODAY (October 19th) between 3:00pm and 4:00pm PST: We received a memory upgrade donation from Sun for our data server, and will be off-line at this time during the install procedure. We apologize for any inconvenience, but this will greatly enhance future server performance.

before this upgrade, it seems that the servers were pretty responsive, and a lot quicker for me downloading work units. Unfortunately today's outage is lasting alittle longer than expected. It is right now 8:30 EST and i still cant connect to the SETI servers. YMMV.

Weekly Update is Up....
.....contrary to what I wrote last night I was able to update the weekly graphs. Check them out
here.

Movement
.....and im not talking bowels...
Uncomm0n moves past the currently defunct Rat Bastard and into the #18 spot. jackal651 moves past both Uncomm0n and Rat Bastard and is now #17. The rest of the top 20 is the same.

SouthPark Admin Crew is idle again. It appears that they are in "frenzy" mode and will be through December. Watch for guru to be taking a shot for #1 while they are trying to crank out some episodes.

ISP Problems.....
.....I was trying to update some of the weekly stats, and it appears that my girlfriends ISP is acting up and I cant access it right now. This also means that any graphs for the page may or may not be available. I will update the weekly stuff as soon as I can access her account.

Weekly Update.....
.....I will update things graph wise when the ISP gets back.....but here is a synopsis on the weekly numbers. Top Movers include
_Quinn, amit, and Guidant moving up 24, 22, and 18 spots respectively. The leaders for Work Units for the week are: guru, SouthPark, and jackal651.....weighing in with 1499, 792, and 397 WUs for the past week. CONGRATS!.

Top 20 News.....
.....Yes we have some movement.
jackal651 moves into the top 20 today......#19 even! Whiner has moved past Rat Bastard and into the 16 slot. Uncomm0n moves past RB also and into the 17 spot. romkey is now at #13. leech and OrlBamf both move past tron into the 9 and 10 spots.

.....AutoLign is positioned to move into the top 5.....if things go as they have in the past week, he will move past cthulhu into the #5 spot sometime this week.

.....other things of note.....R. Marvin has done quite a job this week. He has slashed over an hour off of his average time per work unit.....he has moved into the 10 most efficient members moving from over 11 hrs/WU to below 10 hrs/WU. GOOD JOB!

Overall Team News!
.....
Team Lamb Chop is still in the #8 slot in overall team standings. Intel has moved past MacAddict and is threatening Slashdot.

.....Speaking of MacAddict, they put up a 2.7K spot a couple of days ago to put alittle bit more space between us and them. Most likely that jump is because of addition of new members. Slashdot is still in the doldrums, and we are constantly gaining on them! WOOHOO! Within a month MacAddict should pass Slashdot.....still by the end of the year we should do the same. (I still havent had anyone take me up on the date pool :-)

.....Our membership is lagging. If we are to pass MacAddict, we really do need to add some members. Unfortunately it appears we may have lost one or two members in the past couple of days. The reason why it looks the "split" data for 10/17 looks screwed up is because we lost one or two memebers from the bottom ranks (causing the total WUs from the day to look like they all came from the top 100). Spread the word, we need an infusion of new blood to keep things going in our quest for #2! -public service announcement provided by zAmboni.....

Parting Words.....
......Something good to drink late at night while you are updating the Team Stats (ok it is good anytime)......is
Bell's Oberon Ale. It is a Michigan based brew. If you see it around, get it. You wont be dissapointed!
